Use Online Colleges To Finish Your Degree

There are many different reasons why someone looks for online colleges. They might work full time and need to take their classes from home. Others might feel intimidated if going back to school and want to try a few courses first. It does not matter the reason why, but the fact you are wanting to get an education that counts.

You can do a search of local schools and bring up many online options. It is best to choose an accredited school. If you need to transfer credits, you want to make sure they have an agreement with the school you plan to transfer to. This is also important if you are going to use student loans, as they expect a path towards graduation.

Even local colleges and universities are now offering online courses for their students. They are starting to realize in today’s world that many people do not have the time to attend a full time program in person. This allows someone to get an education while still being able to work or job. A student could take a blend of in person and computerized courses to maximize their time.

You want to know what you are trying to obtain as far as a degree goes. Once you know what field you want to work in and what degree you are going for, this will allow you to search out the proper schools that accommodate your needs.

You can even go online and find blogs and forums out there with information and tips from other current or former students that can give you an idea of what to expect. You can also check into information on if there is a pay scale difference of students who get a degree online versus in person.

Ask the school what type of financial aid they provide or if they even accept financial aid options. To get FASFA or other federal aid, the school will have to be accredited. If they offer private funding, get the proper information on this. If they allow you to make payments, verify how much you will pay out of pocket and what those dates will be. Check into the costs of your tuition and what all that will include. If there are labs, how much more will be added to your costs as well as any textbooks needed.

You might want to check into what their hiring statistics are upon graduation. Do they have a high success rate for former graduates getting employed? Some people want to know if their online teachers have experience or are new at this. Will your instructors be available to answer emails at all times or if there are holidays and weekends, will they be unavailable to you.

See what degrees are offered. Do they only offer associates degrees or do they go all the way to a Doctoral Degree? If you are just getting an associates degree and do not plan to go further right away, this can be fine with a simple online college. For those that plan to go further than a Bachelors, check to see if you continue with them or need to transfer out to another school.

A Parent’s Horror Story About Standardized Tests Considered

Not long ago, I was talking to a very nice grandmother who was homeschooling her grandchildren. We met in the library in the used book sale area, and we got to talking a little bit about homeschooling and the problem with no child allowed to advance or NCLB and she told me her own horror stories over the standardized tests, and indicated this was the reason she took her kids out of school.

Her granddaughter took a test for reading, and on that test there was a story about a dragon who went into a castle, and into a little girl’s private room, and the fire-breathing dragon torched all the toys, and the belongings of the little girl. She was able to get away from the Dragon, get outside the door, and lock the Dragon in. The questions within the standardized test which followed were quite subjective;

1.-What did you think of the Dragon, how did that make you feel?
2.-What do you think happened next?

And one of the answers that the girl chose for the first question was that she; “thought the Dragon was mean,” and for the second question the girl chose the answer; “the Dragon burned down the rest of the castle.” The grandmother was upset because those are perfectly fine answers, but they weren’t the correct answers as per the individual who designed the test, and mind you this was a statewide test, for the reading and comprehension part of the standardized test.

How is it that we can expect our children, and this girl was extremely smart, to use their mind and creativity, and learn new things, if we are to tell them they are wrong on a test which is completely subjective, the story did not explain what anyone thought about that Dragon or how it made them feel, nor did indicate what happened next because the story had ended. The grandmother took the test and argued with the principal of the school, and the principal said these are our standardized tests, and he could not change them.

The little girl argued that the Dragon could easily burn down the castle because many of the castles were built with wood structures holding things in place, and if that would structure burned, all the blocks would easily fall down. Apparently the girl knew more about the structure of the castles during that period in Europe than whomever it was that created the test. Who knows maybe the little girl watches the Discovery Channel like me, I knew that. Further, the Dragon was mean, and that is a mean thing to do; to burn little kids toys, there’s nothing wrong with that answer, the answer is legitimate and correct.

Was there a better answer? The person who designed the test, or some psychologists somewhere believes there was a better answer, but who’s to say? It was obvious that the grandmother was getting nowhere with the school district, and she took her daughter out of school. 18 months later she brought her daughter back to school, unfortunately, her daughter scored much higher than all the other kids by quite a few years in every subject.

In other words she was too smart to go back to school, but the school said they could advance her into an upper grade, but she was so small she might not get along with the other kids, and they might make fun of her, or even pick on her, which could be psychologically traumatic. Well, if that’s the case, then our schools are not doing a good enough job teaching our kids, and we have a serious problem.

Maybe we should just close all the schools, save the taxpayer’s money, and provide online courses that parents can teach their own kids? Yes, that seems like a rather bold statement, but my purpose in this article is to get you to think. And I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
